House of Reformation for Juvenile Offenders (third) opens.

It is located on Deer Island. A separate facility for girls is constructed nearby in 1860. The House of Reformation moves to Rainsford Island in 1895, and closes in 1920. The original building becomes the Suffolk County House of Correction in 1896.*
